How Dental Veneers Change Smiles

You have probably seen a piece of furniture with a wood veneer. This is thin layer of wood that changes the outward appearance of a table or cabinet.

Dental veneers work in a similar way. They are made of a type of porcelain that looks like natural teeth and has the durability to do the things that you need teeth to do (biting and chewing).

Getting veneers is a relatively simple and painless process. If you are a good candidate, here’s how it works.
First, we will remove a thin layer of enamel from your teeth. We do this so that your veneers don’t affect your profile when they are bonded in place. (In some cases, we don’t have to remove any enamel, but that’s something we can discuss more during your consultation.)

Next, we make an impression when your teeth have been prepared. This impression is what the dental lab will use to craft a set of veneers that fit your teeth. Your veneers will be designed to give you the smile that you want to see when you look in the mirror.

It generally takes a few weeks to complete your veneers. When they are ready, you will return to our office. We will check the fit, and then bond your veneers to your teeth.

When you see your new and improved smile for the first time, you may be a little surprised by how different it looks. We’ve seen this happen — in a good way — to many patients.

Why You May Want Dental Veneers

As we mentioned in the opening of this post, veneers can do a lot of things.

You can get a single veneer for one tooth. You can get a few veneers to address a specific issue involving multiple teeth. Or you can get a full set of veneers to completely transform your smile.

Wear and tear are some common reasons people get veneers. So many people have small chips or cracks that may have happened years earlier. Your bite or how you eat certain foods can cause some teeth to show more signs of wear than others.

Even a broken tooth can be restored to its original size and shape with a dental veneer.

Discoloration is another reason that many people get dental veneers. If your teeth are discolored due to staining, you may think of teeth whitening as your first option. That can certainly work for many people, but veneers could offer you a longer term solution.

Whitening is something that must be repeated from time to time since nearly everything you eat or drink adds to the stains on your smile. Dental veneers are more stain resistant than real teeth. As a result, they can keep your smile looking whiter and brighter for longer.

Veneers also can be used to cover issues such as gaps between teeth, crooked teeth, and crowded teeth. We’ve helped many patients who felt self-conscious about their smiles for these exact reasons.

By getting dental veneers, they were about to flash a confident smile with what looked like straight and evenly spaced teeth. (Keep in mind that if you have severe alignment issues, orthodontic care may be your best option.)

And perhaps veneers’ biggest benefit is that they can address multiple issues at the same time. You can hide your stained teeth with the gap in the middle. You can fix your broken teeth and hide your crooked ones, too.
