How We Help Patients with Cavities

Sometimes a cavity will become painful or extremely sensitive. In these situations, you should immediately call us so that we can examine your tooth and see if you do have a cavity. In other cases, you may not feel any pain from your cavity, and you’ll only discover it during your next appointment after we detect it. This is one of the reasons we recommend that all of our clients schedule cleanings at least twice a year.

They have always been more than attentive to my needs with the normal dental work, along with bringing in the appliances or retainers and cleaning them for me. He has fixed a few old fillings, broken fillings. We’ve also replaced a few silver fillings to the white to match the tooth, before another cavity would start that we replace the filling, and with that replacement to use the new white bonding. I think he is wonderful with his personality at alleviating any fears or anything like that. I also bring my two children in with me. They love coming here. There is no questions asked about when the dentist appointment comes up. They can’t wait to get here. The staff is amazing with the kids as well.

Once we discover tooth decay, we will remove that decay and clean the tooth. Depending on the size and location of the decayed portion, we may apply a little anesthetic to minimize the pain and keep you comfortable during the procedure. Dr. Newingham will thoroughly clean the rest of the tooth to remove any small debris or bacteria that may be left over. Once the tooth is clean, we will fill your cavity.

Get Tooth-Colored Fillings for Naturally Beautiful Teeth

Our Birmingham, MI office fills cavities with a tooth-colored composite resin. This metal-free, mercury-free resin comes in several shades so that we can make sure we use a color that perfectly matches your natural tooth. Unlike fillings made with metal and other materials, this filling will completely blend in with your smile. In addition, because this filling will chemically bond with the natural structure of your tooth, it will give the tooth additional strength and integrity when you bite and chew.

When applying the dental filling, Dr. Newingham can get the whole procedure done in a short amount of time so you can get on with the rest of your day. He will simply apply the resin, and then use a special ultraviolet light that will cause the resin to set and bond with your tooth. Afterward, he will adjust and polish the filling to make sure it feels comfortable and natural and does not interfere with your bite or smile. You’ll be in and out in no time, and your tooth will be good as new!

If you have more severe decay in your molar, we may instead recommend inlays or onlays, also made of composite resin, to protect a larger portion of the tooth.
