You’ve already paid for the tickets. You’re ready to see the Spartans or the Wolverines take the field in their home opener. When game day arrives … would you stay at home?
Our guess is that you would probably go to the game. After all, you’ve already paid for the tickets. If you don’t go, it’s not like you can just go later. You would lose the benefit of having paid for them.
In spite of this, there are people in and around Birmingham, MI doing something similar with their dental insurance. They are paying for it (all they have to do is look at their pay stubs), but they aren’t getting the care that’s provided by their plan.
Don’t Miss Out
Disclaimer: Timeframes and coverages vary depending between insurance plans and providers. Please check your plan for specifics of what is covered.
With that disclaimer noted, our experience is that most dental plans are good for a specified amount of time. It’s longer than the time you have to use a ticket to see your favorite football team play, but most plans are on an annual cycle. (Many coincide with the calendar year.)
For you, that means you have set time period to get the benefits that you are already paying for.
Again keep in mind that plans vary, but many will cover much (or even all in some cases) of the cost of a cleaning and exam.
In other words, you are paying for a checkup already by having insurance. If you don’t get that checkup, you run a greater risk of having an oral health problem. The longer you put off your dental visit, the more likely you are to need a more expensive treatment to restore your healthy smile.
Prevention is Your Best Plan
Whether or not you have dental insurance, regular professional care should be part of your oral care routine. Brushing and flossing daily will remove plaque and many cavity-causing bacteria.
Even so, most people don’t brush and floss perfectly every time. This is why most people will get at least one cavity and some form of gum disease during their lives.
Professional cleanings can remove plaque and tartar buildup before you have a gum infection or tooth decay. Professional exams can find these problems in the early stages. That makes your treatments easier on you and your wallet.
If you don’t have insurance, know that we offer a variety of payment options, including financing with CareCredit.
